While the sunflower is normally the first flower modern societies think of for a floral representative of the sun, before encounters between the New World and the Old World the chrysanthemum was the flower that held the title of petaled sun depiction. Chinese gardens have been growing these special flowers for nearly 2,000 years. During this past the chrysanthemum carried several different meanings from loyalty to faithfulness. Modern meaning sways more to the side of steadfastness as it is a symbol for the essence of fidelity. They are thought to be very good luck at weddings.

Protea flowers (particularly the species known as king protea) is one of the oldest living flowers on the planet. Its scientific classification places the protea in one of the oldest floral families on Earth that reaches back 300 million years in the history of our world. The origin of this special flower has its roots in both Australia and South Africa—from a time so far back in prehistory that the two lands were still connected as a single mass before the breaking into the current continents we know on our modern maps. In both countries the subspecies of the protea flowers have a very strong tie to human courage. Native tribes of Australia in particular will try to gather king protea flowers for their warriors before battle or a dangerous expedition.

The hydrangea is a flower that originally grew in Japan, being native to that large archipelago of islands. However, in 1788, with the arrival of long-term British colonizers and trading companies, the flower was sent back to Britain where it became a very popular garden addition for its multiple blooms and beautiful colors. Today, the hydrangea is representative of an “adverb” like meaning than a specific emotion. They are used in combination with other flowers to express a truly heartfelt, sincere message—such as an offer of apology or thanks for a exceptional kindness.

Stargazer Lily

The rich legacy of lilies in all cultures that frequently come into contact with these beautiful flowers is very important in the history of floral messages. The stargazer lily is no exception to this heritage even though it is a very new addition to the lily family as it was a hybrid invention of the 20th century. Its spectacular blooms varying from white to a deep pink has turned the stargazer into one of the most sought after lilies to give to someone special. Almost all lilies were tied to an idea of innocence and purity throughout antiquity and the present—a meaning designated to the lily since ancient Greek and Roman times. White stargazers uphold that lily tradition and even spread farther to represent sympathy as well. The stargazers that waver more toward the pink side of the spectrum are more symbolic of prosperity though, particularly when given as a sign of aspiration for the recipient like at a graduation or recital.
