Each year, millions of people leave their homes and travel to Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. These places are generally considered very friendly to tourists and a place to visit if you are looking to see some amazing things. However, there are plenty of places to avoid in our sometimes dangerous world, and there are a few countries that are on the list of places that a tourist should never go.
Before we go any further, it is important to point out that in most cases, the people in these countries are good honest people who have been dealt a bad hand, typically by the corruption or negligence of their government. Just because someone lives in these countries, it does not mean they are bad people.
Seriously? Do we really need to explain why Iraq is not a good place to visit right now? Yes this country does lie in the Cradle of Civilization, and there are some amazing archeological treasures here. If things were peaceful, you can bet Iraq would be a decent place for any history buff to visit. Sadly, that is not the case right now. For the past seven years, there has been a war ranging there and you want to visit this place? Granted, Iraq does boast some beautiful spots but when you go there you really are taking your own life into your hands when you go here. Ask any tourist organization, or any tourist for that matter, what country they have absolutely no plans on visiting any time soon and you can bet that Iraq is probably going to top the list.
War, drought and crime seem to be common parts of Afghanistan life these days. While most people here just want to live there lives, the war lords that are trying to dominate regions of the country may make things a bit difficult for you if you decide to take your summer vacation here. Just a few years ago, two Japanese teachers were killed after going into the chaotic southern parts of the country. In 2007, 23 Koreans were kidnapped from a bus near the capital of the country. The northern part of the country is safer, but that does not mean it is a place to go. In addition, there is the risk of landmines and unexploded ordnances that are common throughout the country. Each year, roughly 700 people in Afghanistan are killed or injured by landmines. For the time being, Afghanistan ranks right up there with Iraq as a place you should not go for your vacation.
Located in Africa, Somalia has been a country that has seen nothing but strife for nearly 20 years. The company currently has no central government, and this has helped to create a lawless type of situation in the country. This is truly too bad because the country itself is rather quite beautiful. When you ask a travel agent the easiest way to stay safe within Somalia, they will probably tell you that the easiest way is to just not go.
Within the country, kidnappings are very common and many territories are controlled by ruthless warlords who run by their own rules and can be highly dangerous to deal with.
Sudan has been experiencing a horrible drought for several years now and that has caused a great amount of strife within the country. Two of the most common dangers within Sudan are rape and murder, and this is especially true in the area of Darfur. For the past 40 years, there has been a civil war raging within this troubled country and that makes traveling within the country highly unpredictable.
In addition, Sudan does not comply with international flight safety protocols (one of only four countries not to do so), which means that the commercial air fleet of the country consists of planes mostly from the 1950s. What makes this worse is you don’t need to pass a test to be a pilot, nor even have a high school diploma. Last year alone, the country had 27 fatal air crashes in just their northern region so it is no surprise why this country is considered the most dangerous country on Earth for air travel.
The majority of the world’s countries don’t even allow Sudanese planes to fly within their borders. As a result, getting to Sudan is very difficult if you want to go there, but this difficulty can be a good thing considering just how dangerous the country is. Even traveling by car into the country is difficult due to the highly militarized border crossings of the country.
Traveling by bus is also very dangerous due to the poor quality of the roads. A few years ago a bus carrying passengers tipped over and was then blown up by a Liberation Army group. Like with airplanes, you do not need to have a license to drive a bus within Sudan.
Chechnya is a surprisingly beautiful province to visit, but sadly it is also very dangerous. After the Russian Empire collapsed in 1991, there has been near constant conflict between Chechen separatists and Russia, which has turned this province into a war zone. The country has plenty of resources, but the war is destroying much of the infrastructure the country has. Currently, there are roughly 2,000 combatants still fighting within the country. Criminal gangs often kidnap foreigners for ransom in this beautiful place gone bad.
The most populous nation on the African continent, the country has a very unstable economy and political situation which has caused no end to problems within the country. In recent years, over 200 foreign oil workers have been kidnapped within the Niger Delta for ransom. In addition, the level of disease and armed gangs causing chaos are extremely high. Within Largos, the crime level is extremely high and the situation is very dangerous for tourists.
Even sailing near Nigeria is dangerous as it is one of the most active areas in the world for pirates. Things are so bad that if robbers find out that a Westerner is staying at a house of someone in Nigeria, they will go to the house and rampage through it, while possibly killing the inhabitants of the house, in order to steal what the Westerners have.
Even before the massive earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010 hit, Haiti was a country that tourists should avoid. Highly dangerous, it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80 percent of the country living in complete poverty.
Kidnappings and street gangs were a problem before the earthquake and it is even more of a problem now with supplies scarce and infrastructure completely destroyed. This is too bad because the country of Haiti, and most of the people, is beautiful and vibrant. For now, civil unrest, lawlessness and thousands of escaped prisoners are making this country a very dangerous place to go. If you end up going to this country, do not go out walking at night and do not carry a lot of money on your body.
