The Worst Places to Be In a Zombie Apocalypse

March 31, 2010 | Featured, Miscellaneous

Come on, admit it, at one point in your life you have worried that our cozy little civilization would one day fall as the zombie hordes swept across the Earth. Its okay, it’s only natural to think that. In fact, there are many people out in the world who are already prepared for a zombie apocalypse, but there are many more that are not. Now, a zombie apocalypse may be regulated only to the movies, unless some rage-infected monkeys get out, but if there is a sudden increase in the undead, you will want to avoid these locations.

1. Hospital

Okay, so the recently deceased are coming back to life and chewing on the living? Most people when they feel sick go to the hospital. So, with these two tidbits of information, what do you think will have the highest concentration of newly-recruited zombies? The hospital! This is the place you do not want to be when the zombie apocalypse begins because this is typically where it all starts. More and more people come into the hospital, and more and more zombies come out. If you are in a hospital, you might as well consider your number up because this is it; you aren’t getting out of there as a living human.

2. In A Traffic Jam

Rule number one with zombies is to stay away from any place where you can be surrounded, boxed in, with literally no avenue for escape. Zombies can easily be outrun (at least under old-school zombie rules), but if they surround you its game over. So, think of a place where you are boxed in, with no escape, and people all around you. Yes, that’s right, the traffic jam. If a zombie outbreak hits your traffic jam, you will be surrounded by a lot of hungry undead commuters. So, you are in your car as a ravenous horde of zombies begins to move around. What do you do? You can sit in your car and hope they walk past, but they won’t and now you are like a sardine in a can for them. You can make a run for it, but you won’t get far, and you can try to drive away but, well, you are in a traffic jam. Don’t worry though, in about five minutes you will be one of the undead.

3. Skyscraper

You may think a skyscraper is the perfect place to be in a zombie apocalypse. Sure, you are high above the ground, you can watch the carnage below and if you have enough food and water you will be able to relax back and wait for the apocalypse to burn itself out. Well, sadly, in the long run you are not safe at all. Eventually you have to leave the apartment building, and that is when trouble begins. First, the elevators probably don’t work so you need to take the stairs and you better hope there aren’t zombies in there. Once you get down the stairs and through the narrow halls, you need to get outside of the building where you will most likely meet a lot of zombies. The other problem with being in a skyscraper is there are other people in there with you who will turn to zombies and if they know you are in your apartment, there really is nowhere for you to go but down.

While I know deep in that festering black blob of steaming congealed blood I lovingly refer to as my heart that the zombie apocalypse is nigh, I think one aspect of it that nearly everyone ignores is that sooner, rather than later, the zombie hordes must A) starve (presuming that they are alive to begin with; zombies aren’t by definition actually dead people), as humans cannot survive on dead flesh, and after a long or short while anyone they could get their hands on and teeth into would be dead or another zombie—and everyone knows zombies are never attracted to one another, A-subsection-b) would die from the wounds they sustained from the zombie(s) who infected them in the first place, and b) decompose (presuming that they are dead AFTER becoming zombies).

actually a skycraper is a good place to be, lots of places to hide(barricades) and narrow corridors makes you fight with fewer zombies a time.

The graveyard is a great place to go for a break!! Typically in movies, people infected turn into zombies fairly quickly, within 1-24 hours of being bit. There would literally be no time for anyone to have been buried, and zombies don’t like rotted corpses. They like d’em some fresh meat. So, yeah, graveyards would be relatively deserted.

I would rather be in a graveyard than anywhere else:
    A) Nobody would bother you ’cause they’re too scared.
    B) All dead people would be 6 feet underground, far from the infestation, and all flesh and muscles would be decomposed, so if they DO get infected, they can’t get out and attack you.
    C) Crazy grave diggers usually have guns. This is pretty much self explainatory. Dead grave digger = free gun.
    D) The gates are the perfect bottleneck to set traps.
    E) You can just kick back, relax and sip a beer while your neighbor’s being eaten for not knowing where to go.

    • Sharayah

      Agreed. Thanks, friendo

I think that a field with an organized bunker with tons of supplies and people would be good (not tons of people). You could have a group of 8 or 10 people stay in the bunker while another group about that size goes out for more supplies. In a field, you would have plenty of room for traps, barricades, and very importantly, plenty of time to see them coming. Even more preferable would be in a field on a hill or even a small plateau. Then you would have the even better advantage of the high ground along with the other things I mentioned. You could also dig a sweet-ass trench with spikes at the bottom or something. The only downside would be having tons of people you know (knew) and love (loved) become zombies.

a hospitl is actually a great place to be, they are full of sharp pointy things to stab with (as shown in picture) and all thoes needles with who knows what kind of chemicles in them, as well as emergency rooms with shock paddles and sleeping masks to strap on zombies faces, so you might want to rethink that first one

  • anonymous

but the best thing to do would actually be stop the alopakiss, apolylicks, akoalatrips, something, before it starts in the first place

  • http://www.ghostsandmore.info Jason

I'd probably head to the same spot. Generally if it has a church nearby, there will be some place to restock/barricade yourself in if needs be!

  • Nick

I read zombie survival guide and i was about to say the same thing.

    • Jonathan

Ahh, zombie noobs, let me teach you a little about zombie survival. Tip one, NEVER stop moving. Tip two, always have guns and ammo. Tip three, if you didnt prepare it yourself, dont eat it. Tip four, never take to your feet, always have some form of transportation, prefferably independent of fuel(I.e, electric powered, solar charged vehicles)Tip 5, never enter a building unless you absolutley have to.(oh and for those who said a hospital is a good place to be for the pointy objects, youll be one of the first to go, try stabbing your way through 30,000 zombies dude, aint gonna happen, sorry)Tip 6, dont listen to zombie survival guides, common sense and an alert brain is all you need. Tip 7, avoid large parties, only travel with one to two other people. Tip 8, sleep in shifts. Tip 9, always have a light. And finally, tip 10, enjoy your last days on earth, because one way or the other, youll die.Food will run out, no more ammo, dehydration, lack of sleep, one way or the other, you cant run forever, and you cant beat an entire earth filled with zombies.

  • galindo

    top 5 places,
    1. get in a sailboat and anchor offshore, dont think zombies can swim, boat in and out when u need supplies
    2. sewers/underground tunnels, cause u cant really be boxed in, and gives u easy access to whole city
    3. sporting goods/walmart roof, easy access to supplies, multiple exits via fire escapes
    4. a car, park it on the top level of a parking garage.
    5. military base, risky but chances are that the military will have the means of identifying zombies and killing them before they take over the base.

  • Hotrod0068

I really DON'T believe Un-dead zombies are possible, but something like a “28 days later” scenario Does seem like a possibilty, hopefully very remote.
taking over a large sporting goods store would be a good possible refuge, as many are well secured with bars & armored doors, and have camping supplies, and many are also gun stores. as someone mentioned, a wal-mart roof might well be quite secure-able from zombies OR urban scum looters in a SHTF situation, as they usually have camping gear, useful hardware, and usually ammo, if not all having guns for sale anymore. a .22 should be quite adequate for head shots at any distance, tho higher caliber would be better for close range, shotguns especially.
hand weapons could be anything from a golf club to a variety of automotive tools, tho i don't thaink an axe would be ideal, as it might get stuck. an excellent homemade Mace could easily be constructed from a lugnut from a dump truck or semi-tractor, (have you noticed how Big those are!), twisted onto a pipe or ax handle.
BTW, has anyone not heard there is supposedly going to a tv series based on the zombie comic “The Walking Dead” ? the comic is very well written, but quite grim. i very much hope it does air, supposedly in the fall.

  • hu???

i actually think being on a plane is the worst place to be because there is no escape. so i think it would be best to hide underground if there really was a zombie apocalypse.

  • Mermaid999girl

    is the underground safe?

  • Cererean

Depends – is the live wire still working?

It's very crowded; however, if you can make it to an abandoned station which is inaccessible from the surface, you'll have a higher chance of survival. Sewers are a bad idea, and not just because of the disease risk – they're not well lit, so you don't know what's coming after you, and quite small, so there's little room to fight.

Best place? An airship, provided there's none of the zombies with you. Second best place, a boat or ship, or island.

  • B42473

On skyscraper or airplane you could just use parachute and problem is solved…after that you just hit and run if needed (of course flight over sea doesn’t count here, you are screwed anyway unless you are in military base).

  • R-

A supermarket, if it was locked up. It’s the only place you wouldn’t run out of food.

  • mr killa

well my opinion on a zombie apocalypse would be the world gets sick and people are sick zombies or infected not living dead people who come back to life i honestly think this would be fun haha goin on a rampage against zombies using anything u can and finding some friends who arent sick and having them help u

  • Animeworlduk

Many places are safe in the short term – all you need is an impassable barrier between you and the zombies. ie. a floor/den in a building which you can only access via a method that zombies cannot utilise such as climbing a rope or a retractable ladder. That is assuming the rest of floors above you are clear.

After that it is about how long your food supply can sustain you and how you can obtain more.

  • Powerbob

ok for those saying boats and airplanes i bid you farewell cause you will not last too long even without the zombies inboard..
    Why?
on the plane you wont last more than a few hours till you run out of gas and guess what? all airports will be croweded with zombies so no gas stop for you…
and for the boat you might be lucky enough to be fine a few months if its a big one but when the big storms come out then forget about getting rescued by the coastguards and even if you know how to swim youll be drowning in no time during a storm…

any crowded places are dangerous and should be avoided so the best places would actually be to live in small villages cause once you killed the few hundreds zombies around your safe.
or baricade yourself at home if your in towns and wish some idiots trying to run away will pull the zombies far from your home so you can go out to get some food once in a while.

last of all make sure to be only with people you can trust so noone being bitten will try to hide it and get you in deep trouble.

  • Whacko88

I wouldn’t mind if there was a Zombie apocalypse unless the Zombies are as fast as in Left for Dead (hopefully there won’t be any Chargers as well^^) no but seriously it’d be hell of a lot of fun and at least I wouldn’t get bored too fast HAHA!

  • Gamerkmm

Aircraft carrier (Nuclear). Navy would keep me safe wont need fuel for 20 years.  Food would e a problem, but with 5000 well trained men we could easily fight a  Zombie  hoard.

    • Powerbob69

Gamerkmm you sure would be safe for a while but army would send only small groups to gather food so you would be safe untill 1 or 2 get bitten and dont tell it turning your 5000 well trained men into 5000 hungry zombies and then you are in deep trouble left on your boat with no ways to escape.

      • Gamerkmm

No way. Navy would inspect everyone returning to the ship. Quarantine them with guards if there  was any doubts off infection.

        • Troyneapew

my house would be perfect :D

  • Welshboii

zombies were suppost to be real zombies are were from  voodoo were the dead were resurrected from witch doctors in africa were they escaped from white slavery

  • ANTHONY

HONESTLY!!! I WOULD GEAR UP, LEAVE, ME N CLOSE LOVED ONES N MOST LIKELY FIND PEOPLE ON THE WAYTHAT KNOW HOW TO USE A GUN AND A SAMURI SWORD AND HEAD ON TO ANTARTICA!!! WHY??? CUS I WOULD FOR SURE KNOW THAT IF A DEAD CORPS DOES REACH OVER THERE, IT WOULD BE A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE NATURE IT SELF WOULD HELP US BY FREEZING A DEAD BODY STONE COLD WHICH NO LONGER HAS HEAT- THERE FOR INMOBILIZING IT. YOU HAVE TO GEAR UP YOUR INNERSELF AS WELL TO STEP UP TO SHOT AND GET RID OF A PERSON THAT WOULD BE INFECTED IN YOUR GROUP FOR THE SAFTY OF THE REST.

  • Cthompson86

Best place after gathering supplies and ammo ….a small remote island….  When say supplies I mean seeds, fishing supplies…and a boat would be nice…

    • Powerbob

well if you want to go to any island you will need a boat first of all so i dont see the point of mentioning it would be nice to have one :P
